bistable relay: a deep dive into its functionality and applications

A Bistable Relay (also known as a latching relay or magnetic latching relay) is an electromagnetic switch that can maintain its current state without continuous power supply. Unlike regular relays, which require continuous current to keep their contacts either in an open or closed state, bistable relays can switch between two stable states (ON and OFF) with just a single pulse and remain in that state until the next pulse triggers a change. This unique feature offers significant benefits, especially in terms of energy efficiency and reliability in various applications.

Understanding the Basics of Bistable Relays A Bistable Relay operates based on an electromagnetic mechanism, but what differentiates it from traditional relays is its ability to stay in either of its two stable states without needing continuous electrical power. A typical bistable relay has two coils, and depending on the current applied to these coils, the relay switches between its two stable states. Once the relay changes state, it remains in that state even when power is turned off, relying on internal mechanisms such as permanent magnets or mechanical latching to maintain its position.
