The Working Principle of an Electromagnetic Relay The fundamental operation of an electromagnetic relay is based on the interaction between an electric current and a magnetic field. It consists of a coil, a movable armature, and one or more sets of contacts. The coil, made of copper wire, generates a magnetic field when current flows through it. This magnetic field attracts the armature, causing it to move and either close or open the contacts, thereby controlling the flow of current in the circuit. When an electrical signal is applied to the relay’s coil, the magnetic field generated pulls the armature towards the coil, which in turn moves the contacts. These contacts can either close or open, depending on the relay’s design (normally open or normally closed). When the current is switched off, the magnetic field collapses, and the armature is returned to its original position by a spring, thus restoring the contacts to their default state.
